The Monterey Peninsula’s only beachfront hotel has made its grand return.
The Monterey Beach Hotel, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property, has reopened its doors after undergoing a stunning renovation that blends its classic charm with modern luxury.
Originally built in 1967, the hotel now boasts 192 rooms, including four suites, most of which offer breathtaking ocean views through large picture windows that frame the Pacific.
The renovation, led by Los Angeles-based Indidesign in partnership with real estate investment firm Ascendant Capital Partners, global hotel management firm Highgate, and global investment manager Centerbridge Partners, has transformed the property into a showcase of California coastal design, effortlessly blending old-school charm with contemporary sensibilities.
As part of the hotel’s dramatic makeover, the property now includes 600 feet of private shoreline exclusively for guests to enjoy, making it the only beachfront hotel on the entire Monterey Peninsula.
Inside, the design reflects a calming, neutral color palette with an emphasis on local artistry, including mixed media artworks, handcrafted ceramic pieces, and massive, colorful murals by area artists. These elements can be found throughout the hotel’s common spaces, creating an ambiance that celebrates the natural beauty and artistic spirit of the Monterey area.
Guests can also indulge in an array of new amenities, including:
- Three dining venues that highlight local ingredients and talent. The Lantern Room, the hotel’s signature restaurant, offers farm-to-table breakfast and dinner with a nautical flair, while the Lobby Lounge serves up morning coffee and sunset happy hours featuring light bites. The beachfront Tidewater eatery boasts fire pits, live music, and lounge seating, perfect for watching the sunset over the ocean.
- A heated outdoor pool and hot tub, ideal for relaxation in any season.
- Scandinavian-inspired contrast therapy (coming this fall), featuring barrel saunas and ice baths for a unique wellness experience.
- Complimentary Zybra e-bikes for exploring the scenic Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail.
The renovation aimed to honor “the quintessential central California coastal experience” while creating “an entirely new aesthetic and elevated experiences,” according to Alex Halpern, co-founder of Ascendant Capital Partners. Halpern explained that the project pays homage to the convergence of ocean, nature, and the vibrant community that defines Monterey’s charm, making it a reflection of the region’s spirit.
The hotel’s reimagined design and expanded amenities cater to travelers looking for a luxurious coastal getaway. For dining, local flavors are celebrated, from Captain + Stoker coffee to Alvarado Street craft beer and Ad Astra breads. Whether enjoying the hotel’s art-filled spaces, dining on fresh, locally sourced cuisine, or relaxing at the pool, guests are immersed in the best of what Monterey has to offer.
Nathan Hanner, general manager of the Monterey Beach Hotel, emphasized the hotel’s commitment to providing an unparalleled guest experience, combining premium dining options, modern interiors, and a unique sense of place along a special stretch of California’s coast. “Our hotel stands out among the rest, with a reimagined hotel experience, premium dining offerings, and best-in-class hospitality style,” Hanner said, adding that the hotel is ready to welcome both new travelers and returning community members alike.
Room rates at the Monterey Beach Hotel start at $350 per night, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking luxury, comfort, and stunning ocean views. This reopening marks a significant addition to the Monterey Peninsula’s hospitality landscape, offering visitors a unique beachfront experience in one of California’s most picturesque coastal regions.
