This 100-Foot LA Masterpiece Was Built by One Man Over 33 Years Using Zero Blueprints

Need a break from beaches and bougie brunch spots? Step off the beaten path and into a mind-blowing world of art, passion, and perseverance. If you’re into hidden gems that come with jaw-dropping backstories, you’re gonna want to add this one to your California bucket list.

Watts Towers – A Sculptural Wonder Built by One Man and a Dream

Rising high above a modest neighborhood in South Central LA, the Watts Towers are unlike anything else in the state. This towering collection of 17 interconnected sculptural structures—some reaching nearly 100 feet into the sky—was crafted entirely by hand over a span of 33 years.

Italian immigrant Simon Rodia poured his heart, soul, and sweat into this passion project, using only simple tools, steel rods, cement, and found objects like broken glass, seashells, tiles, and soda bottles. No cranes. No blueprints. Just pure, unfiltered creativity.

What makes it so incredible? Rodia didn’t just build art—he built a legacy that challenges how we think about expression, resilience, and community.

The Watts Towers, Towers of Simon Rodia, or Nuestro Pueblo (“our town” in Spanish) are a collection of 17 interconnected sculptural towers, architectural structures, and individual sculptural features and mosaics within the site of the artist’s original residential property in Watts, Los Angeles. The entire site of towers, structures, sculptures, pavement and walls were designed and built solely by Sabato (“Simon” or “Sam”) Rodia (1879 or 1886 to 1965),[5] an Italian immigrant construction worker and tile mason, over a period of 33 years from 1921 to 1954. The tallest of the towers is 99.5 feet . #watts#losangeles#californialove
