There’s a town in Southern California that looks like it was pulled from a storybook.

1. It’s Called Idyllwild, and Yes, That Name Is Real
Tucked into the San Jacinto Mountains about an hour from Palm Springs, Idyllwild sits at over 5,000 feet elevation with fewer than 3,000 year-round residents.
The town doesn’t have a single traffic light.
There’s no McDonald’s, no Starbucks, no big-box anything.
It was once named one of America’s top art towns, and walking through downtown you’ll understand why.
2. The Town Mayor Is a Golden Retriever Named Max
This isn’t a joke.
Idyllwild has elected a dog as its honorary mayor since 2012, when the local animal rescue held a fundraiser where only pets could run for office.
The current mayor, Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller III, took office in December 2022 at three months old after Mayor Max II passed away from cancer.
He’s the third golden retriever in the mayoral dynasty, and he takes his ceremonial duties very seriously.

The Devil’s Slide Trail climbs 1,700 feet in just 2.5 miles to Saddle Junction, where it connects to the Pacific Crest Trail.
From there, you can push on another few miles to the Tahquitz Peak Fire Lookout, a wooden structure built in 1937 that sits at 8,846 feet and offers views stretching all the way to the Salton Sea.
It’s the highest fire lookout in the San Bernardino National Forest, and it’s still staffed by volunteers who hike up and stay overnight.
If that sounds like too much, the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail is 2.6 miles of gentle forest walking with views of Lily Rock and Suicide Rock, named for a tragic Cahuilla legend that predates the town by centuries.

Idyllwild Arts Foundation was established here in 1946 and has become one of the most prestigious residential arts high schools on the West Coast.

Middle Ridge Winery is a boutique tasting room and art gallery in one, pouring wines crafted by a local winemaker with live music on weekends.
And when you want something more casual, Idyllwild Brewpub serves house-brewed IPAs alongside chicken wings and views of the surrounding forest.
The town has a strong breakfast culture too, with old-school diners and coffee shops that fill up early with hikers fueling up for the trails.
6. There’s a Nature Center Built on an Ancient Cahuilla Village
The Idyllwild Nature Center sits just a mile northwest of town and offers five miles of easy hiking trails through pine and oak forest.
The museum inside features displays on Cahuilla Native American culture, including the bedrock mortars where Indigenous people once ground acorns into food.
The park itself is located on the site of an ancient Cahuilla village, and the educational programs here connect visitors directly to that history.
