Anza Borrego wildflower guide ⬇️🌺🌵 NOW (early March) is THE time to head down to the desert to catch these beautiful California Poppies & desert wildflowers. Where to go in Anza: 📸 Henderson Canyon is the place to spot these babies. There is plenty of parking along the road and many spots where it’s easy & safe to walk into the fields without stepping on flowers 🌞 Sunrise is the best time to visit for amazing photos and to have the fields all to yourself!! And, if you are lucky, you may just catch a rainbow off in the mountains (seriously pinching myself this was so cool!) 😱 I was NOT prepared for how amazing the air smelled in these fields. Like inside a floral candle (but also, bring your seasonal allergy meds lolz) Add Anza Borrego poppies to your Southern California bucket list!! #travel #wildflowers #anzaborrego #california #whimsysoul #visitcalifornia #poppies #flowerfields #nature #mothernature #rainbow #desert #borregosprings #poppyfield #explorecalifornia #californiaflowers #sandiego #californianature #californiatravel

Where Is It?

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is located in Borrego Springs, about a two-hour drive east of Los Angeles. Your first stop should be the Visitor Center at 200 Palm Canyon Dr, Borrego Springs, CA 92004, where you can grab maps, get the latest information, and plan your adventure.

Tips for an Epic Visit

  • Operating Hours: The Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October 1 to May 31. The park is open year-round, but facilities may have seasonal hours, so it’s always a good idea to check ahead.
  • Reservations: While day-use doesn’t require a reservation, camping at popular spots like Tamarisk Grove and Borrego Palm Canyon Campgrounds does. These spots fill up fast, so be sure to book in advance, especially during peak seasons.
  • Admission Fees: A day-use vehicle pass is $10. Camping fees vary depending on the site, so check ahead for rates and availability.
  • What to Do:
    • Hiking: Explore the park’s hiking trails, including the Borrego Palm Canyon Trail, where you might spot desert bighorn sheep and discover a desert oasis.
    • Wildlife Watching: The park is home to amazing creatures like roadrunners, desert tortoises, and even the elusive mountain lion. Keep your eyes peeled!
    • Stargazing: As an International Dark Sky Park, Anza-Borrego offers some of the best stargazing in the area. With minimal light pollution, you’ll feel like you’re staring into an endless sky of twinkling stars.
    • Art Installations: Don’t miss the Sky Art sculptures by Ricardo Breceda, where prehistoric creatures and whimsical designs are scattered throughout the desert. It’s art you’ll want to take a picture with.
  • What to Bring:
    • Water: It’s a desert, so bring plenty of water, especially if you plan to hike or camp.
    • Sun Protection: The sun can be intense, so pack sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
    • Navigation Tools: Cell service can be spotty, so consider downloading maps or bringing a GPS device.
    • Camping Gear: If you’re planning on camping, make sure you bring all the essentials, as amenities are minimal.
