The California Desert Where Rocks Stand Vertical Thanks to the San Andreas Fault

LA is known for its beaches, palm trees, and overpriced lattes—but did you know it also has a jaw-dropping canyon that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie? Welcome to Devil’s Punchbowl, a hidden geological wonder that feels like a desert escape, yet it’s only about an hour from the city.

With massive, tilted rock formations, rugged hiking trails, and an almost eerie silence, this place is nothing like the LA you’re used to. If you’re craving an adventure that doesn’t involve traffic or parking nightmares, this is the spot to check out.

Where to Find This Wild Landscape 🗺️

Devil’s Punchbowl is tucked away in the San Gabriel Mountains, near Pearblossom, CA. Despite being so close to LA, it somehow remains one of SoCal’s best-kept secrets.

Getting there is easy—just hop in your car and follow the scenic Angeles Crest Highway until you reach the Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area. No exhausting treks just to find the trailhead. You’ll be exploring in no time.

📍 Devil’s Punchbowl in Pearblossom CA near the San Andreas Fault – one of my favorite hikes to get away to and explore. Devil’s Punchbowl is a 1 mile loop, but for a longer hike, you can do Devil’s Chair which is 7 miles! #californiahikes #earlyriser #hiking #womenwhohike #sanandreasfault #palmdale #outdoors #nature #fyp

What to Expect & When to Go ⏳

🔥 Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall are perfect. Summers can be brutally hot, and winter occasionally brings snow (yes, in LA!).

🥾 Must-Bring Items: Plenty of water, sunscreen, and hiking shoes—the terrain is rocky, and you’ll definitely want good grip.

🐍 Watch Out For: Rattlesnakes! This is their turf, so stay alert and stick to marked trails.

Things to Do Here 🌄

  • Hike the Devil’s Chair Trail: A 7.5-mile round-trip with jaw-dropping canyon views.
  • Explore the Shorter Punchbowl Loop: A beginner-friendly trail that gives you all the stunning rock formations with way less effort.
  • Rock Scramble Like a Pro: The sandstone formations are perfect for climbing (just be safe).
