This Is NOT Portugal – It’s California!

This is Not Portugal!

Forget booking that flight to Europe—California’s got its own slice of island paradise that could easily be mistaken for Portugal. Channel Islands National Park is all about rugged coastlines, hidden coves, and cliffside views that look like they’ve been pulled straight from the Algarve. But spoiler alert: you’re still on the West Coast.

1. Island Hopping, But California-Style
Sure, Portugal has the Azores, but did you know California has its own island chain? Channel Islands National Park offers five stunning islands, each with its own adventure. Whether it’s hiking on Santa Cruz, snorkeling off Anacapa, or camping on Santa Rosa, the vibe is pure island escapism—no long flight required.

2. Sea Caves That Could Rival Benagil
The Algarve might have its famous Benagil sea cave, but Channel Islands brings its A-game with Painted Cave, one of the largest sea caves in the world. Kayaking through this massive cavern feels like stepping into another world, with light bouncing off the water and rocky walls that could easily be mistaken for southern Europe’s most Instagrammable spots.

3. Beaches You’d Swear Were in the Algarve
Santa Cruz Island serves up beaches that feel like they belong on a postcard from Portugal. Picture secluded stretches of golden sand, crystal-clear water, and zero tourists in sight. It’s the perfect place to soak in those Mediterranean vibes—except you’re still in California. Wild, right?

4. Cliffside Views That Scream Lagos
Lagos is known for its dramatic cliffs, but Channel Islands might give it a run for its money. Hike along the island trails, and you’ll get sweeping views of jagged cliffs dropping into the deep blue ocean. Every viewpoint looks like it belongs in a European travel guide, but you’re just a boat ride away from the mainland.

5. Wildlife You Won’t Find in Portugal
Portugal might have its fair share of wildlife, but Channel Islands has the island fox, a pint-sized predator you won’t find anywhere else. Plus, there’s no shortage of sea lions, dolphins, and whales around these parts, making every boat ride an adventure in itself. Think of it like a California safari—without the crowds.

6. Snorkeling That’ll Make You Feel Like You’re in the Azores
The Azores are famous for their underwater adventures, but Channel Islands offers an equally epic experience. Dive into kelp forests and swim with vibrant fish in waters so clear you’d think you were in the middle of the Atlantic. It’s California’s best-kept snorkeling secret.

7. No Crowds, Just Pure Coastal Bliss
What’s better than all this natural beauty? The fact that it’s basically empty. No packed beaches or elbowing your way through tourists—just you, the ocean, and miles of untouched coastline. It’s the kind of place where you can truly escape, with nothing but the sound of the waves and the call of seabirds to keep you company.

So No, It’s Not Portugal—It’s Better
Channel Islands National Park might not have the same name recognition as Portugal’s coastal gems, but that’s part of its charm. Rugged, raw, and refreshingly quiet, it’s got all the stunning landscapes and adventure you’d expect from the Algarve—minus the crowds. Time to grab your gear and experience California’s most underrated island escape.

And yes, your friends will 100% think you just got back from Europe.

@pang__bang I just spent the most incredible two days here and all I could think about was how lucky we are to have places like this protected for us to enjoy forever. Have you been to this National Park yet? Thank you @Santa Barbara Adventure Co for hosting me so that I could spend more time exploring the beautiful Channel Islands. Scorpion Canyon Campground is great for beginner backpackers because there’s fresh water and vault toilets at the campsite and you only have to carry your gear about 1 mile round trip. To properly explore Santa Cruz Island I’d recommend 3 days and I HIGHLY recommend booking the adventure kayak tour with SB adventure Company ahead of time!!
