7 Cute & Easy Picnic Food Ideas for Breakfast with Girls

A breakfast picnic really comes down to: can you eat it without a table, does it have to be hot, and will it survive a 20-minute car ride in a basket.

If the answer to all three is good, it’s picnic food.

Most of what’s here you can make the night before, which is the other thing — nobody wants to be up at 6 AM cooking for a picnic.

1. Frittata Muffins

Eggs, cheese, and whatever vegetables you have, baked in a muffin tin. They’re good warm but they’re just as good cold, so you can make them the night before and not think about it again.

I usually do spinach and feta or whatever’s about to go bad in the fridge. They’re not precious about it.

2. Greek Yogurt Strawberry Overnight Oats

Stir everything together in a jar the night before. Grab the jar in the morning. That’s it.

The Greek yogurt is what keeps these thick and filling — not that watery overnight oats thing where you’re hungry again in an hour. The strawberries turn everything a little pink, which, if you’re putting together a cute breakfast spread, is a nice bonus you didn’t have to work for.

3. Easy Overnight Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting

You assemble everything the night before — roll the dough, cut the rolls, put them in the pan, cover, fridge. Morning of, you just preheat the oven and bake them. Wrap the pan in a towel before you leave and they stay warm longer than you’d think.

This is the one that makes people think you put in way more effort than you actually did. Make the cream cheese frosting — it’s what makes them.

4. Bite-Size Party Board

A big board covered in small food. Caprese skewers, brie with fig jam, chocolate-covered strawberries, fruit, crackers, nuts, a couple of dips. Everything is one or two bites and nobody needs a plate or a fork.

For a morning picnic, lean heavier on the fruit and lighter cheeses and skip anything too rich. Set it on a cutting board in the middle of the blanket and let everyone pick at it. That’s the whole format — graze and talk.

5. Chocolate Strawberry Cupcakes

Cupcakes for breakfast at a picnic with your friends — I don’t see the problem.

The frosting on these is made with real strawberries that you cook down, so it actually tastes like strawberries instead of that artificial pink flavor. You can bake the cupcakes a couple days ahead and frost them the morning of. They travel well in a container and there’s nothing to slice or plate.

6. Strawberry Crunch Bars

Golden Oreo crust, strawberry cheesecake filling, crunchy strawberry crumble on top. No baking — you just freeze the whole thing and cut it into bars. If you remember those strawberry shortcake bars from the ice cream truck, same neighborhood.

They do need to stay cold, so bring a cooler or an insulated bag with ice packs. Worth the extra planning.

7. Chocolate Yogurt Strawberry Clusters

Frozen Greek yogurt and strawberry blobs dipped in dark chocolate. Sounds a little strange, tastes really good. The chocolate shell cracks when you bite in and the inside is cold and creamy.

About 60 calories each, so it’s more of a snack than a dessert. They melt fast though — keep them in a container with ice packs and don’t pull them out until people are actually eating.

Packing Notes

Bring a small cooler for the overnight oats, strawberry crunch bars, and yogurt clusters. Everything else is fine at room temperature.

Wrap the cinnamon roll pan in a kitchen towel to hold the heat.

Everything here can be made the night before — some of it days before. Morning of, you’re just packing the car.
