1.25 Miles from Freedom: Inside Alcatraz, Where America’s Most Wanted Were Never Found

If walls could talk, Alcatraz would have plenty to say. Floating in the middle of San Francisco Bay, this legendary island once housed the most notorious criminals in American history. But behind the steel bars and stone walls lies a story far deeper—of resilience, escape attempts, and surprising beauty. A visit to Alcatraz isn’t just a tour; it’s an experience that grabs you and doesn’t let go.

Where Is It?

Just 1.25 miles off the coast of San Francisco, Alcatraz Island is only accessible by boat. Ferries depart regularly from Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, and the ride itself gives you stunning views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and city skyline.

What to Expect on the Island?

🔐 Learn About Escape Attempts – Including the famous 1962 breakout that inspired countless movies. Spoiler: they were never found.

🌿 Explore the Gardens – Alcatraz isn’t all concrete. The historic gardens, tended by inmates and staff families, are beautifully preserved.

Alcatraz at night > during the day 👀 Skip the day time tours and swap it for a creepy night tour of Alcatraz Island and prison. This is absolutely a touristy thing to do in San Francisco but literally so well produced and 100% worth your time. I mean, you get a stunning cruise around the bay, get to watch the sunset over the city and Golden Gate Bridge, and have a historical prison as a playground for a few hours. Their audio tour is so well done I swear sometimes I felt like the prison was still actually active.
